With recent bombardment of natural disasters, we here at The Ottawa Sound decided that our first show we plan would be a fundraiser. One of my good friends is from Mexico City, so we chose to raise money for the victims of the Mexico City earthquake. But planning a benefit show is a lot more difficult than one would expect! There are so many aspects that you need to take into account, and most venues will still want a cut of the money, not to mention that most promoters won't even work with you unless money is involved. You can't always expect people to look at good publicity as a form of payment. Using music as a way to raise money and awareness isn't a new concept, but when you aren't a major recording act on a record label or one of the biggest promoters in your city it is harder to get taken seriously and many people will try and take advantage of your inexperience.             BEARINGS RELEASES EP            "NOTHING HERE IS PERMANENT" BEFORE TOUR WITH STATE CHAMPS Album Cover of "Nothing Here is Permanent" Local band Bearings released their 3rd EP on September 8th, 2017. The 5 song album features the song "North Hansen" which has become one of their most popular songs to date. As mentioned in the last article slavery played a major roll in the development of modern pop music. Musicianers (Slaves that played music) would go on to create a musical culture that influenced African's and European's alike. One of the major things that emerged after slavery was new genres of music. Jazz and the Blues would go on to influence almost every genre of music that we listen to today! A Quartet of Musicianers But before we talk about the Blues and Jazz we need to discuss minstrelsy. Minstrelsy was when white performers would dress up in black face and go around performing. Most of the time this was meant in a way to mock and hate on former slaves and popular black performers. Minstrelsy was actually the first form of performing art to originate in America and it was one of the direct styles that lead to the development of the Blues. Sorry that we haven't been posting our history videos the last week or so but Kyle has been sick. They will be getting uploaded on the 11th promise! We would like to congratulate Lees Avenue once again on the release of their EP and also a big congrats to Bearings for signing to their label, finishing their EP and booking a big tour with State Champs! The scene has been very busy this summer and we hope that all the fun continues as the summer ends and the school year starts!
